Letters From A Pastor to His People December 22, 2019
Id like to "dedicate" this letter to our very own Father Emanuel. Why? Well, first of all, Father Emanuel is just awesome, so why not? Second, because Father Emanuels birthday is December 25th (thats right, he shares Jesus birthday!). And, third, because we hear the name Emmanuel mentioned in our readings this 4th Sunday of Advent and on Christmas. Isaiah prophecies, "the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel" (Isaiah 714), and Matthew repeats this passage.
In the fourth Sunday of Advent, the First Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah. We have the familiar story about the Prophets confrontation with King Ahaz of Judah. Isaiah tells Ahaz to ask God for a sign so that God can show him that he is with him. Ahaz says he will not tempt the Lord. Even though Ahaz refuses to ask God for a sign, Isaiah says that God will give a sign “The virgin will conceive a child and give him the name Emmanuel (Godwithus).” The essence of this story is that Gods plan will triumph in spite of mankinds refusal to cooperate.
Whether you are single, a busy parent with kids, or emptynesters, you can celebrate Advent like you are actually anticipating the coming of Christ—which is the whole point. Its a spiritual journey!
When you know what the season is meant to be, you will more likely do the kinds of things that emphasize that purpose. Please visit our Advent 2019 page to explore the various opportunities to help you deepen your spiritual experience this Advent season.
The Saint Juliana School Board needs your nominations for the annual Sr. Remy Schaul Service Award!
The award recognizes an individual who has volunteered his/her time, talent, and/or resources to better the school—whether by maintaining the physical quality of the building/grounds or improving the educational opportunities for our students.
The award is open to all parishioners, though school/parish employees are not eligible for services required as part of their employment responsibilities.
Registered parishioners may submit nominations online at stjuliana.org/remyor in writing to the school or parish office c/o Mike Kelly, School Board President, by January 3, 2020.
For many, the day after Christmas is one of the saddest days of the year. The thrill of opening presents has evaporated and is perhaps replaced by disappointment in what we did not receive or, even worse, something we did receive but thought would be better. (Take note material items never completely satisfy.) Trees and decorations are, in some households, already taken down and we are confronted by the sober awareness that it will be another 364 days before we experience a similar excitement.
