Missalette Notes

On the weekend of December 2-3, a new liturgical year begins with the first Sunday of Advent. The new church year traditionally finds our missalette volunteers busily changing to the new updated music issue and the Advent Christmas missalette. This year we shall herald the new year with a large print hymnal! The hymnal, Breaking Bread 2007, is a compilation of all of the missalettes which normally are changed throughout the year along with the music issue.

The hymnals are published by the same music publisher we have been using, OCP (Oregon Catholic Press), and will include the Sunday readings for the whole year beginning with the first Sunday of Advent through to the Feast of Christ the King next fall. All of the music from the music issue we have used in the past and the seasonal music from the changing missalettes is also included. In the back of the hymnal the Daily Mass Propers are also included for those who attend daily mass.

We, in music ministry and as a staff have been discussing the need to move to a larger print hymnal for a while now. We hope that this new hymnal will be a useful and helpful way to meet all of our liturgical needs. Along with the large size of each book (because of the larger print) the hymnals are also thicker to accommodate the whole years worth of Sunday readings. All of the prayers and sung mass parts we used from our past missal are still available to us and they’re all in one book!

Although there is a large size vinyl cover available for use with the new hymnals, we have chosen to forgo the purchase of the covers while we evaluate our new hymnals. Therefore, please be gentle in your use of the new Breaking Bread 2007 Hymnals. We would like them to last for the whole liturgical year while being well used but not abused! We hope that the larger print in our new Hymnal will encourage and enable all of us to pray and sing together.
