Sr. Remy Schaul Service Award
On Sunday, January 31st, the St. Juliana School Board presented the Sr. Remy Schaul Service Award to Todd and Melody Steffen in recognition of their many hours of volunteer work for St. Juliana Parish and School.
The Sr. Remy Schaul Service Award was created in memory of the former St. Juliana School teacher and principal who devoted many years of her life to service in the St. Juliana Parish Community. She led a life that was exemplary in generosity and charity. Her dedication to the children of St. Juliana was unwavering as she continued working as a volunteer teacher after her retirement and even as she waged a personal battle with cancer.
This year’s recipients of the Sr. Remy Schaul Service Award, Todd and Melody Steffen, are themselves graduates of St. Juliana School and are currently the parents of 3 children who attend St. Juliana School. They have been tireless workers in many different aspects of school and parish life and most currently have been leaders in the major parish fund-raising event, The Blacktop Ball.
The Sr. Remy Schaul Award plaque includes words from the famous prayer of St. Francis, “It is in giving that we receive”, a favorite prayer of Sr. Remy. These words clearly have meaning for the Steffens because of their great spirit of giving many others receive benefits

Go Make a Difference
"Hearts with Haiti" is non-profit organization whose primary mission is to support the Catholic orphanage, Saint Joseph's Home for Boys, and a school for disabled childern, Wings of Hope, both in Haiti. We are helping to support this caring group by holding a special "Hats On For Haiti" day on Wednesday, February 3.
After Mass, students will donate a minimum of $1.00 to wear a hat of their choice all day. All proceeds will go directly to "Hearts with Haiti". We are working in conjunction with Our Lady of Hope Parish in Rosemont, Illinois as all relief funds will be matched by an anonymous donor.
Let's all wear our hats and help those who help others.

Iditarod Racers - Pat Moon and His Dog Hera - Visit SJS
Pat Moon, an alumnus, visited St. Juliana Schoool this afternoon to talk about the Iditarod Race. Pat is the only Iditarod Race participant from Illinois! He raises sled dogs in northern Michigan. The Manicki family won this presentation at the Black Top Ball along with a visit to Pat’s farm to see the dogs. During the race in March the students will be tracking his progress online at the official Iditarod Race site. Hopefully Pat will return to St.Juliana in April to tell us all about the race.

New Science Lab Opens
The opening of the new science lab is a dream come true for the students and teachers at St. Juliana School. The dream’s fulfillment started with the Blacktop Ball fund-raising event held in May of 2009 where the creation of the science lab was targeted as “Fund A Cause”. After months of construction, the science lab is now ready for use.
On Sunday, January 24th, an invitation was extended to all those who donated money for the creation of the science lab, to attend an Open House tour of the new science lab. Principal Kathleen Barton, St. Juliana Pastor Fr. Steve Kanonik, and science teachers Mrs. Kristina Reyes and Mrs. Amanda Oh as well as St. Juliana students were present to greet the visitors and demonstrate the new equipment.
Anyone interested in viewing the completed science lab should come to the St. Juliana School Open House on Sunday, January 31st. The school will be open for visitors from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM that day as a part of the Catholic Schools Week activities.
