Bargiel 5th Grade Week of 10/02-10/06

5th Grade English/Vocab: This week we are working on identifying and writing complex sentences using correct punctuation. We will be discussing the differences between compound sentences and complex sentences as well as coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions. We will start Lesson 9 and review fragment and run-on sentences as well.
 
Unit 3 Vocabulary test will be on Friday, October 6th. Students will complete pages 30-32 in class. On Tuesday students will begin working on Synonyms/Antonyms and Practice worksheet. This will be due on Thursday. 
 
5th Grade Reading: We will continue reading our novel study Holes by Louis Sachar this week. Students and teacher will take notes on each chapter and discuss plot elements, characters, and comprehension questions as we read. Notes will be posted on Google Classroom, but students should be recording notes while they read as well. Students will be given a graded worksheet to complete based on notes and discussion of chapters 1-10 on Thursday. Journal prompts related to the reading will also be completed in order to help students make deeper connections with the text. Don't forget to continue working on iReady at home. Students are expected to spend at least 45 minutes working on the assessment(s) and pass at least one. Every extra assessment passed will earn the student a punch on their punch card. Students who have ten punches will receive a spirit wear day pass. 
 
5th Grade Math: We are continuing on Unit 2 this week. We will deal with addition and subtraction with decimals using the standard algorithm, partial sums, and place value models. Students will use rounding, compatible numbers, and estimation to check for reasonableness of answers.Don't forget to continue working on iReady at home. Students are expected to spend at least 45 minutes working on the assessment(s) and pass at least one. Every extra assessment passed will earn the student a punch on their punch card. Students who have ten punches will receive a spirit wear day pass.
